Search Console release timeline

A chronological record of material reporting, interface, API, and property changes.

Additional data required Intermediate

Search Console instructions age quickly. Use this selected timeline to date a screenshot, explain a discontinuity, and decide whether an older tutorial still describes the current product. It focuses on changes that materially affected reports, data access, property management, or analysis workflows; it is not a record of every interface adjustment.

Dates below are announcement or documented effective dates. A launch date does not always mean every eligible property received the feature that day.

July 7: platform properties announced

Google introduced platform properties for Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube accounts or channels. These properties provide Performance, Insights, and Achievements views of how the creator's content is discovered through Google. Google said availability would expand gradually over the following weeks, so July 7 is the announcement date rather than a universal access date.

June 3: dedicated generative-AI Performance reports launched

Google launched separate Search and Discover reports for impressions in supported generative-AI experiences. The Search report includes AI Overviews and AI Mode. The initial rollout is limited to a subset of sites and exposes impression data by supported dimensions, not query, click, CTR, position, or citation data.

May 7: FAQ rich results stopped appearing

Google's anomaly log records May 7 as the point from which FAQ rich results no longer appear in Google Search. Corresponding impressions fall in both Performance search-appearance data and the FAQ rich-result report. This is a Search feature change, not a logging outage.

March 11: branded-query filter available to all eligible sites

Google updated its November 2025 announcement to say the branded/non-branded filter had reached all eligible sites. “Eligible” still excludes path and subdomain properties and sites without sufficient signals. It is not equivalent to availability on every property.

December 8: social-channel insights experiment

Google began testing a website Insights view that includes automatically associated social channels. It was limited to selected sites, and users could not add arbitrary channels. The July 2026 platform-property launch is related but different: a platform property is its own verified property, not merely a channel card attached to a website's Insights report.

December 4: AI-powered Performance configuration

Google announced an experimental natural-language configuration control for the Search results Performance report. It translates a request into filters, comparisons, and selected metrics; it does not perform the analysis or take actions on the data.

Official announcement

November 20: branded and non-branded query filtering

The initial launch introduced AI-assisted branded classification in Search results Performance and a related Insights card. The filter was gradual at launch and later reached all eligible sites on March 11, 2026.

Official announcement

October 27: query groups in Insights

Google introduced AI-generated groups of similar queries for properties with a large volume of query data. Groups summarize clicks and can change over time; they do not change ranking or replace the underlying query rows in Performance.

Official announcement

September 9: six structured-data types removed from Search Console reporting

Course Info, Claim Review, Estimated Salary, Learning Video, Special Announcement, and Vehicle Listing were removed from rich-result reporting, the Rich Results Test, and applicable search-appearance filters after their Search displays were phased out. API support continued only through December 2025, and the corresponding BigQuery search-appearance fields began returning NULL by October 1, 2025.

Official announcement and September update

June 30: Insights moved into the main Search Console interface

Google launched the integrated Insights report to replace the standalone beta experience. It combined simplified performance summaries with links into the detailed Performance report and retained Achievements. Google's current help page still describes Insights as gradually introduced.

December 12: 24-hour Performance view

Google announced a last-24-hours view with hourly granularity and preliminary points for Search results, Discover, and Google News. Unlike other Performance date ranges, the view displays time in the browser's local time zone.

August 5: Search Console recommendations

Recommendations began as an experimental Overview feature that turns existing indexing, crawling, serving, and performance evidence into optional suggested actions. A recommendation appears only when Google has one available and may expire or change.

July 11: shipping and return settings

Eligible merchants gained the ability to manage Merchant Center account-level shipping and return policies from Search Console. Google states that settings entered there take precedence over corresponding website markup.

Official announcement

April 16: stronger ownership-token management

Search Console added a verification step for confirming that unused ownership tokens had actually been removed. This extended the user and permission improvements launched in 2023 and addressed the risk of a removed verified owner regaining access through a leftover token.

Official announcement

2023

December 1: mobile-specific testing reports retired

Google retired the Mobile Usability report, Mobile-Friendly Test, and Mobile-Friendly Test API. Mobile usability remained important, but Google directed debugging toward tools such as Lighthouse rather than preserving a Search Console-wide pass/fail report.

Official retirement notice

October: How-to reporting and testing support removed

After How-to rich results stopped appearing on desktop on September 13, Google said it would drop the How-to search appearance, rich-result report, and Rich Results Test support 30 days later, with Search Console API support removed after a longer transition.

Official change notice

April 19: Page Experience report simplification announced

Google announced that the combined Page Experience report would become a guidance page and dashboard entry point, while the Core Web Vitals and HTTPS reports remained separate. Google also clarified that there is no single Search ranking signal called “page experience.”

Official announcement

February 22: users and permissions moved fully into Search Console

The new management experience distinguished verified and delegated owners, exposed current and former verification tokens, added ownership history, and prepared for retirement of the standalone Webmaster Central verification tool.

Official announcement

February 21: BigQuery bulk data export

Search Console added scheduled daily export of Performance data to BigQuery. Unlike API extraction, it is not constrained by the Search Analytics daily row limit, although anonymized queries remain filtered for privacy and Google Cloud storage and query costs apply.

2022

September 14: HTTPS report announced

Google began gradually rolling out a dedicated report explaining which indexed pages were served over HTTPS and which issues prevented HTTPS selection.

Official announcement

August: International Targeting report deprecated

Google removed the report and its country-targeting control. Its documentation update retained the general guidance for multilingual and multiregional sites but removed references to the Search Console tool.

April: URL Parameters tool removed

Google deprecated the tool one month after its March 28 announcement. Google said its systems would learn how parameters function automatically; the old parameter configurations were not migrated into another control panel.

Using the timeline correctly

  1. Identify the date of the screenshot, tutorial, query, or dashboard discontinuity.
  2. Distinguish announcement date, rollout window, and effective removal date.
  3. Check Current feature & rollout status before assuming a launch completed.
  4. Check Reporting anomalies & known issues before attributing a sudden metric change to a product release.
  5. For a retired feature, use Deprecated reports & replaced tools to find the current workflow and its limitations.

This timeline cannot prove that a feature reached a particular account on a particular day. Gradual launches, eligibility thresholds, data-history backfills, and late documentation updates can all make account-level dates differ.
